The past few years have witnessed a renewed attention to the conversation around restitution and repatriation of artworks from the African continent.

On the 11th and 12th of June 2021, Jim Chuchu and Dr. Njoki Ngumi of the Nest Collective, in collaboration with Chao Tayiana of African Digital Heritage and independent curators Kahira Ngige and Rosie Olang’ took part in the Unexpected Lessons symposium, a performative discursive event that served as the first iteration of the Talking Objects Lab.

The inaugural event was co-hosted digitally between Nairobi and Berlin, during which the curatorial team in Nairobi engaged with this question of Decolonizing Knowledge and Memory through vox pops, panel discussions, video conversations and a card game (currently in development).
